Thanks BuzzFeed, for making this one of the 45 best Tumblrs of 2013. Especially as it hasn’t been updated in a while.
Why not? This started as a light-hearted response to the way Google’s promotional materials for Glass were very diverse in terms of their models: a mix of genders and races, yet all the earliest adopters posting selfies of themselves wearing Glass seemed to be white men.
Plus there was that VC photo, which still makes me smile every time I see it. But this was a bit of fun until the commentary around the blog became more ‘oh yeah, look at those douches, those glassholes, what a bunch of wankers’.
That wasn’t ever the idea, and it started to feel like bullying – posting a picture felt like holding up for abuse people who were just excited and happy and sharing their new tech-toy. So I stopped.
(Also, a couple of people wrote very good blog posts about what White Men Wearing Google Glass said about racial politics in Silicon Valley, and I thought ‘I’m British, I’m a white guy, I’m out of my depth here…’)
Anyway, the BuzzFeed article nudged me into writing this, to explain the dead Tumblr. I’m off to self-endorse myself for ‘virality’ on LinkedIn, while posting a selfie in a self-driving car. Actually, that gives me an idea for a blog…
Maybe there’ll be more posts here from time to time, though. I’m going to Le Web next week, and there should be a fair few Glass wearers to spot. Stay tuned!
